The need for drip irrigation arises in the high cases of poor production levels experienced with other methods of irrigation.
This guide gives you the necessary information, and techniques for installing a drip irrigation system and maintaining it.
10 Easy Steps for Installing a Drip Irrigation System
Assemble the tools and Materials
A drip irrigation system needs some set of pipes, fittings, filtration kits, valves, pressure regulators, and emitters. All these are materials needed for installing a drip irrigation system.
Drip Tapes
It is the heart of drip irrigation systems as they provide a systematic or controlled water supply. The design has small holes at proper equal points along the pipe to ooze water.
Drip Connectors
Includes offtake, middle, and end connectors. Drip connectors allow ease of connecting pipes to drip tapes. The aim is to ensure a leak-free connection.
Pressure Regulators
To maintain the pressure of the system. It allows air release to keep water flow steady and at the same pressure and flow rate.
Water Filters
For trapping dirt, silt, and other debris from the irrigation system. Plants need clean water free from chemicals and harmful waste. Filters also prevent pipes from clogging and thus help maintain the pressure and flow rate.
Pipes
For distributing water to the drip lines. Mainline HDPE pipes need to be and quality liable to enhance smooth water reach to all parts of the farm.
Choose a Layout that works for You
According to the crops, you are the crops you want to grow, you ought to select a good suitable drip layout.
Drip layout varies as per the number of lines per bed. The layouts can take 1-3 drip lines per bed.
Closely spaced crops take 3 drip lines per bed while far spaced crops take 1 or 2 lines per bed.
Prepare for Installing a drip Irrigation system
Getting ready to install drip irrigation system is done by clearing the land to give room for pipe work.
Get rid of rocks and other objects such as sticks that can interfere with the process.
The next step is to make trenches for laying the pipes.
Connect to the water Source
Link them to the water source. Again, use the appropriate connector. Use a tank connector to enhance pipe joins to the tank.
Install a water Filter
Connect a water filter to the system. Place it at the start of the water supply in the main line pipe next to the ball valve.
Arrange and Connect Mainline pipes
Lay the pipes on the trenches and connect them using suitable connectors. Connect end plugs to the main line pipe ends. Bury the trenches with soil.
Connect Risers or laterals.
Connect the risers to the mainline pipe to supply water to the drip emitters.
Install a ball Valve
A Ball valve can be placed at the section where there is a branching connection to control the flow of water.
Connect a Pressure Regulator
Fit a pressure regulator to the highest point of your irrigation system.
Test and Flush the System
Open the water connection to test leakages and to remove any sediments in the pipe.
Cover the Trenches with soil.
Covering the trenches secures the pipe and makes it firmly fixed onto the soil. Soil covers also protects the pipe from damages.
