Onion farming under Irrigation : Most Ideal Driplines

Most people will go for drip irrigation, while some other farmers will go for mild and small spring glass. Sprinklers are also effective in a way, but we are going to give you the advantages and disadvantages of all those methods so that you choose for yourself.  There’s also a traditional method that was called furrow Irrigation. But this one has a lot of work and so most people are running away from it. It also consumes a lot of energy, so let’s talk about drip irrigation.

What Components to Connect with Driplines?

In drip irrigation, there are basic components. There are basic things that you need to have for you to have a complete  onion drip kits system. For example, if you’re collecting water from the stream, you need a small pump to have your water from the stream to your collection. In that case you must have a tank be it plastic or concrete, in a raised area to store water for smooth flow down the drip irrigation system. Therefore, the first thing is a tank then a tank connection which requires a simple tank connector.

Next step is to channel it down, maybe using an elbow. You need to make a control system at the connection from the water tank and then maybe an elbow down and then direct it to the farm. So that is a simple tank connection. So other people will make use of a filtration unit in the connection because it will help in filtering the silt out from the tank water towards the farm so that you don’t block the drip lines.

Farm Preparation and What You Should do

Let’s talk about farm division into blocks where we will lay the mainline pipes, that is start connection pipes. In our case, we are using HDPE pipes and fittings thus we divide, for example, for one acre into four blocks. Every block has a control valve and this will allow you to optimize the pressure from your tank and irrigate each block uniformly at a given time. From there, the fittings that we use may be ball Cork and elbow connectors which are available in wide range for you to choose. Want to learn the appropriate connection and farm layout for onions, follow the guidelines below.  Now let’s talk about how to install our how to do onion farming and drip kit installation. In Onion farming, you should be conversant with the output you are looking forward to achieving. All the vision begins with proper land preparation.

Bed Spacing Consideration

driplines

Most people will make a bed of 1M with a footpath of up to 30 centimeters or even 40. There is a higher possibility of land being wasted for people who do 50 centimeters or up to 70 centimeters and will limit your output. So, you should consider a smaller spacing to maximize the area under onion production. Put a footpath of 30 centimeters after all. The spacing is important to allow physical movement when weeding, spraying or harvesting.

You prepare the one meter width and then the length that we advise the farmers based on the gravity should not be more than 30 meters so. In one bed, at least 4 lines of drip lines will be laid on maximum, but other people will do 3. You can also find other farms with beds containing two driplines per bed as well . But this depends on also the budget and the choice of the client. Yeah, requirement now.

Tank and Mainline Connection

The afterward step is to transition from the mainline or start tank connection to a mainline pipe connection. In this process, it best to place and connect your pipes underground in trenches to enhance pipe longevity and make the connection look better.

Connecting the pipelines follows after you have laid the main pipes, you connect them using the HDPE connectors. You divide your blocks using visible hydrants you cannot you can divide  that is below.

You must raise it up for you or for easy management and easy usage of the hydrants. After hydrants, you install your submain. On the sub mainline you drill the holes for the drip line connection. Let us check the video below to understand  how you drill the holes. The standards driplines in Kenya is 16 MM and also comes with fittings of 16 mm size that you have to use it.

Riser and Dripline Connection

Connection of driplines requires that  you drill the sub mainline pipe, use a rubber grommet on the hole and insert a start connector. Insert a riser pipe that is approximately 1 ft long  to protrude to the ground. Use a takeoff to the connection to join the riser pipe to the preceding driplines.

Dripline Connection

Once you have cut and laid the driplines on the beds, connect them to the takeoff. Don’t forget to use an end cap on the dripline ends to prevent water loss. Your connection is complete and ready for testing, just turn on the water connection and see how it works. As the best supplier, we have several prices for driplines in Kenya.

How Quality and Prices Relate  to Dripline Effectiveness

It is good to be vigilant when purchasing driplines as it is easier to fall for low quality driplines. What causes these problems is the enticing low prices that make farmers forget that quality is the main factor to consider.

How to Consider if Prices Matches Driplines and  Installation

Farmers need to beware of deals and installation plans before considering a deal for drip irrigation installation.  For example, a low price package for drip kits may seem a bargain but you later learn that it comes with quite few number of things. Such kind of dealers will use a maximum space so that they use less driplines and fittings. Therefore, as  a farmer, always ask what is involved in your drip kit so that you can understand whether it is worth your money.
